Sustainability at Westfield Shopping City Süd

As Austria's largest shopping centre, we take our responsibility in terms of climate and environmental protection very seriously, and see the issue of sustainability as a central part of our corporate strategy. In the course of our group-wide sustainability initiative "Better Places 2030", we have been implementing very specific environmental and climate protection initiatives for several years and are constantly expanding them.

The measures range from supplying the centre with green electricity from sustainable generation in Austria, the installation of a huge photovoltaic system on the roof, to structural measures such as the thermal renovation of the façade, the renewal of the technical building equipment and the installation of new windows with triple-glazed insulating glass. This alone has reduced energy and electricity consumption by around 20 percent. In addition, we are constantly working on further measures and innovations and are making sure that the public transport connection and the mobility offer for visitors are improved.

ENERGY & HEAT

CO2 savings of approx. 9,000 tons - as much as 600,000 trees can absorb in a year

SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE: Westfield Shopping City Süd and our store partners work together to develop sustainability objectives and measures.

GREEN LEASE CONTRACTS: Our store partners are contractually required and supported by Westfield Shopping City Süd to make their business operations as sustainable as possible.

BIODIVERSITY STUDY: Promote biodiversity by mapping flowering plants and breeding birds on the site.

SPECIES PROTECTION: With 10 beehives and several thousand bees on the site, we are setting an example for environmental protection and against bee mortality.

SUSTAINABILITY DAYS: As part of our CSR strategy, this annual event is all about making a voluntary contribution to sustainable development and assuming social responsibility.

BETTER PLACES 2030

Westfield Shopping City South is one of 86 shopping centres worldwide belonging to the international real estate company Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield. As part of this group, SCS has joined the group-wide sustainability initiative "Better Places 2030" and has set the following specific goals, among others:

Reduce Co2 footprint by 50 per cent by 2030.
Promoting regional economic development and local entrepreneurship through partnerships with companies and networks from the region.
Implementing cooperation with local NGOs and aid organisations.
Creation of additional jobs and apprenticeships in the centre.
Implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives at the centre such as the "World Down Syndrome Day".

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs)

A key cornerstone of our CSR strategy is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) define 17 specific targets for sustainable development and the promotion of peace and prosperity on a healthy planet. With our sustainability initiatives, we make a direct contribution to achieving 10 of the 17 goals. The focus is on decent work and economic growth (Goal 8), industry, innovation and infrastructure (Goal 9), sustainable cities and communities (Goal 11), responsible consumption and production (Goal 12) and climate action (Goal 13).

GREEN SOLAR ENGERY ON OUR ROOF

Westfield Shopping City Süd is Austria's largest shopping centre and, due to its size, not only has countless shops and restaurants, but also a huge roof area. We have been using this for electricity production since spring 2021.

For this purpose, a total of 8,000 photovoltaic panels were installed by the company 10hoch4 Photovotltaik. The state-of-the-art PV system is thus as large as two football fields - and the largest photovoltaic system on the roof of a shopping centre in Europe. It generates up to 3 million kilowatt hours of green electricity per year - enough to supply 900 4-person households. In the process, the SCS saves around 675 tonnes of CO-2 per year.

On the occasion of this, the Puls4 format "Klimaheldinnen" was a guest at our centre. The informative programme, which was first broadcast on 27 September 2022, takes you up to the roof of the SCS and gives an overview of our sustainability strategy.
