We are committed to continuously improving our centres' environmental performance and minimising our carbon footprint.

Design elements such as green and brown roofs – featuring bird and bat boxes, and wildflowers – and pocket parks provide ecological and aesthetic benefits to the local area, while our living walls help with air filtration and noise reduction.

Our centres produce a large amount of waste, so we strive to recycle as much as we can, and what we can’t recycle goes to energy recovery. Using low-energy LED lighting throughout our malls, relying on 100% renewable wind, solar, thermal and hydro power, and collecting rainwater to use in our bathrooms are just some of the other ways we are trying to minimise our impact on the environment.

Our vision is for Westfield centres to be the most diverse, sustainable and inspiring places to visit and to create places that promote and encourage environmental sustainability. All of us must work to achieve these goals because a healthy planet leads to a healthy community.”

- Alyson Hodkinson, Head of CSR UK at Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield

We also require our retailers to adhere to environmental guidelines when fitting out and running their stores including using recycled materials, limiting single-use plastics and restricting energy usage outside trading hours. To limit single-use plastics, we have a number of Virgin Pure water stations around our centres for customers to refill their water bottles for free and reduce their plastic consumption.

Our food digester helps us reduce the amount of food waste at Westfield London. The digester turns leftover food into an odourless dry material that has a high nutrient value which we use to help maintain the plants and living walls around the centre.

But that's not our only recycling programme - we want to help our customers and retailers recycle their coffee cups to further reduce waste. We collect these used cups, and arrange for them to be upcycled into other products.

Our three car parks at Westfield London operate a ticketless system at where entry to the car park is monitored by automatic number plate recognition. Within the car parks we offer  70 electric charging points as well as secure bike storage with free air and changing tools.

And our dedication to sustainability has been rewarded with an "Very Good" BREEAM rating due to our efforts to improve, innovate and make effective use of resources.
