transition
Discover the Better Places Certification - a transparent rating of the sustainability of all our centres
Creating Sustainable Places
At Westfield we are committed to the environmental transition of cities and the sustainable evolution of retail. To evaluate and monitor our progress, we developed the Better Places Certification, a tool that helps our destinations stay committed to reducing environmental impact and creating positive social change. The Certification assesses our destinations based on 96 criteria, measuring a wide variety of indicators from the amount of water used to the number of jobs created locally. This framework is a starting point, enabling us to monitor our performance so we can keep improving the environmental and social impact of all our centres. All our shopping destinations will be graded from A to E, then challenged to improve their grade, creating a virtuous circle of sustainable change and progress.
Continuously improving sustainability
Westfield commits for the environmental transition
We are committed to improve the carbon footprint and environmental efficiency of our assets and operations. We contribute to global carbon neutrality, with a clear priority towards reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions, and we operate an efficient and resilient portfolio that minimises negative impact on resources and the environment.
Westfield London: Our Better Places Certification and performance
Thanks to our Better Places Certification, we can assess the potential for improvement at our centre.
Your Westfield team is working continuously to enhance this grade over time.
Westfield London shopping centre commitments
ONGOING INITIATIVES
Our dedication to sustainability has been rewarded with an 'Excellent' BREEAM rating due to our efforts to improve, innovate and make effective use of resources. Westfield London has maintained an ISO14001 certification to standard for over a decade in recognition of our effective environmental management system and commitment to mitigating our impacts on the environment.
FUTURE INITIATIVES
We aim to improve our Energy Performance Certificates to as high a rating as possible.
ONGOING INITIATIVES
Our ambition is to minimise our environmental impact and ensuring we operate the Westfield London centre ethically and sustainably. This means reducing our carbon footprint, implementing circular economy principles and improving local biodiversity.
One of the ways in which we’ve been able to do this is by procuring 100% renewable energy. Energy efficiency is further improved through low-energy LED lighting, passive infrared sensor (PIR) lighting, and advanced Building Management Systems for energy optimisation and control. 2025 saw the first installation of renewable solar power on our roofs, and now we generate some of our energy use onsite.
FUTURE INITIATIVES
At the forefront of our environmental transition is our ambition to contribute to global carbon neutrality. Guided by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved net-zero goals, we are committed to significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across all scopes.
We aim to cut GHG emissions by 90% for Scope 1 and 2, and by 50% across Scope 1, 2, and 3 by 2030, progressing toward a 90% reduction across all scopes by 2050.*¹
ONGOING INITIATIVES
We are actively reducing water consumption across at Westfield London through the installation of low-flow tap aerators, waterless urinals, and energy-efficient boosted cold-water pumps – initiatives that have helped cut water use by 87% since 2019. To further support sustainability and our guest experience, Virgin Pure water stations are available throughout our centre, providing free refill points to reduce single-use plastic bottle consumption.
FUTURE INITIATIVES
We are committed to further improving our water efficiency, with a goal to reduce water consumption intensity by 20% per footfall by 2030.*²
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
We continue to enhance local biodiversity and community well-being through a range of green initiatives. Westfield London features extensive green roofs planted with sedum and wildflowers, which support pollinators, provide natural air cooling, and help reduce stormwater runoff. Across the centre, pocket parks and living walls improve air quality and create inviting green spaces for visitors, with more than 68,000 plants on-site. Behind the Southern Terrace, we have a greenspace home to two beehives that produced 60 lbs of high-quality honey in 2024 – double the yield from the previous year.
FUTURE INITIATIVES:
By 2030, we aim for 100% of our portfolio to implement renaturation projects,³ restoring natural habitats and enhancing ecosystem resilience. We are also committed to achieving biodiversity net gain⁴ across all development projects, ensuring that every new initiative contributes positively to the environment.
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
We are committed to reducing waste and promoting circular practices across our centres. Since 2022, 182,035 kg of food waste from retailers has been processed through an on-site food waste digester and converted into renewable energy, avoiding 106 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions – the equivalent of powering over 12,000 homes. In 2024, our coffee cup recycling programme collected and upcycled 569,869 cups and 29 tonnes of coffee grounds. We also partner with TRAID to provide textile donation sites to our guests, diverting 7,685 kg of clothing and shoes from landfill in 2024, diverting 65 tonnes of CO₂ from landfill.
FUTURE INITIATIVES:
By 2030, we aim to engage tenants to reduce waste by 15%⁵ and achieve a 70% recycling rate. We are pursuing comprehensive on-site waste segregation and ensuring materials are recycled locally or sent for energy recovery instead of disposal. We have been zero waste to landfill since opening.
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
Our three car parks at Westfield London operate a ticketless system at where entry to the car park is monitored by automatic number plate recognition. Within the car parks we offer 70 electric charging points as well as secure bike storage with free air and changing tools.
FUTURE INITIATIVES:
We aim to upgrade the bike services we offer our visitors.
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
We require our retailers to adhere to environmental guidelines when fitting out and running their stores including using recycled materials, limiting single-use plastics and restricting energy usage outside trading hours.
FUTURE INITIATIVES:
We have developed an internal framework that will encourage retailers to engage in sustainability initiatives like repair services, product rental, extended warranty or sale of second-hand products.
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
We are dedicated to supporting our local communities, with every employee given a volunteering day to contribute to meaningful initiatives. In 2024, our teams provided 1,368 hours of volunteering, including preparing and donating 45,000 meals to The Felix Project, fundraising for LandAid to support young people facing homelessness, and providing gift packages and winter kits for residents of Caritas Anchor House. Westfield London also proudly founded and supports WEST Youth Zone, helping create opportunities and safe spaces for young people while contributing to over 20,000 jobs since 2008.
(1) In absolute value, from a 2015 baseline
(2) In L/visit from a 2019 baseline
(3) Renaturation projects are defined as any project related to the improvement of biodiversity and biophilia in and outside the shopping centres
(4) The Biodiversity Net gain calculation will be done using the Biodiversity metric released by DEFRA
(5) From a 2019 baseline, including waste from common and private areas of the shopping centres
