It’s May, and the sounds of spring are all around! In our first book, we’ll celebrate the musical sounds of a variety of animals. Next, we’ll explore how different instruments come together to form an orchestra. Kids will also make their very own musical instrument and have a yummy snack.

      Get ready to make some noise!

      This month at our May Fun Day event we're reading two great books, "The Jazz Fly" by Matthew W. Gollub, and "Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin" by Lloyd Moss. Both books explore the wonderful sounds and music that surround us.

      Can't join us at the event? Here are ways you can explore music and sounds with your kids:

      The Sounds of Nature: Next time you head outdoors with your kids for a walk, take some time to listen to your surroundings. Depending on where you live, you might hear birds chirping, waves crashing, wind whistling through trees. Ask your kids to imitate the sounds they hear.

      The Sounds of Music: Many parks host free concerts during spring and summer. Check your area for a list of local concerts and festivals that feature music. Your family can also put together a band with instruments you can make at home, such as a paper mache bird rattle, a coffee can drum, and paper mache maracas.

      The Sounds of Silence: Are the kids ready for some quiet time? Print out these music themed images for them to color.

      Let's Hear it for Mom: Mother's Day is May 12th! A great addition to the traditional breakfast in bed would be a private concert for mom! Ask the kids to surprise you with a performance of your favorite song.
