5 WAYS TO RECREATE THE NANCY MEYERS INTERIORS TREND

Jessica Harris | July 2024

If you've ever curled up with The Holiday, Father of The Bride or Something's Gotta Give on a rainy afternoon you'll appreciate the warm and fuzzy feeling writer Nancy Meyer films provoke. But it's not just the lighthearted storylines and familiar faces that keep us coming back for more, it's the interiors.

From coastal chic aesthetics to THAT dream kitchen in It's Complicated, Meyers films have a habit of projecting a warmth and familiarity through the set designs. The low-lit living rooms, book shelf walls, oversized sofas and family knick knacks are synonymous with Meyer films and leave us wanting to completely redecorate. There's nothing ground-breaking or difficult about the aesthetic, in fact, it's probably one of the easiest styles to recreate but is so popular 'Nancy Meyer interiors' is a term that's more recognised than the films themselves.

At Westfield London's Home Quarter, we have everything you need to create a timeless, cosy home – think rattan chairs, antique-style furniture paired with crisp white furnishings, a dash of blue and earthy tones to achieve the look. It's all-American homes with lots of feminine touches without being girly and an atmosphere that makes you want to have friends round for a glass of wine and a good gossip. If it's good enough for Meryl, Diane and Reese, it's good enough for us!

USE A NEUTRAL COLOUR PALETTE

Nancy Meyers interiors always have a white, beige and cream colour base throughout. In Something's Gotta Give, the beach house had crisp white walls and big cream sofas. In It's Complicated, Meryl Streep's house had earthy ranch tones and warm white kitchen. And in The Holiday, Cameron Diaz's house was entirely white with black accents. It may seem cold but it's the furnishings and lighting that really warms up the space.

LAMPS, LAMPS, LAMPS

It's not accidental that Nancy Meyer interiors have a cosy atmosphere – it draws the audience in and makes them feel like they're getting a big hug. This is predominantly down to the use of a lot of lamps in the rooms. Whether it's floor lamps or table, the combination of the both and the odd kitchen worktop lamp is an inviting addition. If there is a central light, it's often a chandelier or something traditional that is dim and mainly for show.

GO FOR IT WITH ACCESSORIES

What sets Meyers interior style apart is that it makes the audience feel something. It's as if you're a fly on the wall in this characters home and you feel as though you have been invited in. From family photos and personal artefacts to dog-eared books and ornamental bowls, it's warmth radiates from the accessories that adorn the room. If makes the space feel lived-in and loved which is easily achieved.

MIX OLD AND NEW

Consider pairing an antique desk with a modern armchair or a worn leather pouffe with this year's rug trend – it makes a room feel homely and less clinical. It's implying that the character has built their home by collecting pieces throughout their lives and on their travels.

COMBINE TEXTURES

Natural materials feature heavily in Nancy Meyers interiors. A rattan blind, boucle chair and rustic wooden coffee table look very at home together while stoneware and ceramics are the main focus for décor choices. It adds depth and interest to a room in terms of styling and brings those neutral colours to life.
