This holiday season, Westfield Garden State Plaza is excited to celebrate the return of its legendary, iconic “Big Santa” display!
From the 1950’s through the 1980’s, an unforgettable 51-foot high, illuminated “Big Santa” was perched atop a chimney in Westfield Garden State Plaza’s parking lot facing Route 17 – from which it could be seen for miles. For generations of Bergen County residents, “Big Santa’s” arrival signaled the unofficial start to the holiday season every year.
Ever since the display was discontinued over 30 years ago, local families have continued to reminisce about Big Santa, teasing the imagination of an entire generation of children who have never actually had a chance to see the monumental exhibition themselves. At the same time, Big Santa has been the focus of several magazine and newspaper articles over the years as many Westfield Garden State Plaza shoppers have repeatedly requested the return of the beloved display.
“We are incredibly excited to bring Big Santa back to Bergen County,” said Jay Daly, General Manager of Westfield Garden State Plaza. “Like its legendary predecessor, it is our hope that the new Big Santa – along with all the new holiday décor that will debut this season throughout the shopping center – will come to symbolize the joys of the holidays.”
“Growing up in Paramus, I always looked forward to seeing the Big Santa each year and have shared that memory with my kids,” said Paramus Mayor Richard LaBarbiera. “I am so thrilled to have partnered with the Garden State Plaza team on embracing a great tradition and introducing Big Santa once again to a whole new generation of youngsters in our community.”
The new 45-foot-tall, illuminated Big Santa – replete with his size 90 boots – is located adjacent to Nordstrom (at entrance #7) and is visible from both Route 17 and Route 4.
