Westfield commits for the environmental transition
We are committed to improve the carbon footprint and environmental efficiency of our assets and operations. We contribute to global carbon neutrality, with a clear priority towards reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions, and we operate an efficient and resilient portfolio that minimises negative impact on resources and the environment.
Westfield Glòries' commitments
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
We currently have a D rating on our energy performance certificate.
We have the BREEAM certification in use, with EXCEPTIONAL ratings in Building and EXCELLENT in Management.
FUTURE INITIATIVES:
Our goal is to improve our Energy Efficiency Certificate to A (Very Efficient).
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
We are committed to efficient energy management by ensuring that equipment remains switched off when the shopping centre is closed. In addition, 100% of the electricity we purchase comes from renewable sources, and we have solar panels on-site that generate 15,500 kWh of electricity annually.
FUTURE INITIATIVES:
El nostre objectiu és augmentar en un 1070% l’electricitat solar produïda al centre. També volem reduir el nostre consum d’energia en un 20% (en comparació amb el consum de l’any 2019) abans del 2030.
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
We collect rainwater for irrigating landscaped areas and for toilet flushing. The volume of recovered water is equivalent to the water savings from more than 60,000 showers.
FUTURE INITIATIVES:
We aim to reduce our water consumption by 27% by 2027 and increase recovered water used for cleaning, irrigation and toilet use by 80%. To achieve this, we reuse rainwater, groundwater and treated greywater, helping to promote a more sustainable management of this valuable resource.
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
We support local biodiversity through landscaped areas featuring native plant species, and we use only environmentally friendly gardening and cleaning products, helping to minimise our environmental impact.
FUTURE INITIATIVES:
Our goal is to install beehives on our rooftops and increase the presence of native plant species to support biodiversity and help restore natural habitats within our local environment.
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
We are committed to responsible waste management, ensuring that 95% of our waste is recycled or converted into energy. Every month, we recover 27 tonnes of cardboard and 7 tonnes of plastic, preventing thousands of materials from becoming waste and contributing to a more circular economy. These amounts are equivalent to 270,000 cardboard egg cartons and 233,000 water bottles, respectively.
FUTURE INITIATIVES:
Our goal is to double our waste recycling rate, reduce waste generation by 20% by 2030, and move towards a zero waste-to-landfill model. To achieve this, we promote the reduction, reuse and recovery of waste generated across our facilities, supporting an increasingly circular and sustainable approach to waste management.
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
We promote more sustainable mobility by providing our visitors with 16 electric vehicle charging points and 52 bicycle parking spaces. Through these initiatives, we support more environmentally friendly transport options and help reduce our environmental footprint.
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
Our goal is to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90%, and Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 50% by 2030, compared with 2015 baseline levels. Through these efforts, we are moving towards a more efficient operating model and strengthening our commitment to tackling climate change.
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
67% of Westfield Glòries retailers have achieved an Active, Advanced or Leader rating in our Sustainable Retail Index, based on retail revenue. To date, assessments have been carried out across fashion, sportswear, jewellery, handbags, footwear and accessories retailers. Our goal is to extend the assessment to all remaining retailers by 2027, promoting increasingly sustainable practices throughout the centre.
ONGOING INITIATIVES:
Our goal is to strengthen our collaboration with the city and local organisations to help create employment opportunities within our community. To support this ambition, we run Step Into Retail, an in-person training programme focused on the key skills required for careers in the retail sector, actively supporting participants throughout their job search. In addition, we are committed to organising at least one annual sustainability awareness initiative, helping to inspire and educate our visitors about the challenges and opportunities of a more sustainable future.
