Discover the Better Places Certification - a transparent rating of the sustainability of all our centres

The Better Places Certification

At Westfield we are committed to the environmental transition of cities and the sustainable evolution of retail. To evaluate and monitor our progress, we developed the Better Places Certification, a tool that helps our destinations stay committed to reducing environmental impact and creating positive social change. The Certification assesses our destinations based on 96 criteria, measuring a wide variety of indicators from the amount of water used to the number of jobs created locally. This framework is a starting point, enabling us to monitor our performance so we can keep improving the environmental and social impact of all our centres. All our shopping destinations will be graded from A to E, then challenged to improve their grade, creating a virtuous circle of sustainable change and progress.

Our shopping centre's commitments

BREEAM In-Use certification with Outstanding results (in Asset Performance) and Excellent results (in Management Performance), confirming the building’s exceptional friendliness toward users and the environment (5).

Future goals
To maintain the highest possible performance parameters of our building with regard to its impact on the environment and our local community.

We use 100% green energy in the common areas of our center.

We operate an intelligent building management system that provides continuous monitoring of ventilation, heating, air conditioning, lighting, and water consumption, allowing us to optimize the use of resources.

In summer, when outdoor temperatures allow, we cool the building at night using natural ventilation, saving energy that would otherwise be required for mechanical ventilation and air conditioning during the day.

We use energy-efficient LED lighting, and photovoltaic panels installed on our roof can generate up to 40,000 kWh of energy per year.

Future goals
By 2028, 35% of the energy consumed by the center will be generated by our photovoltaic panels.
By 2030, we aim to reduce energy consumption by 50% compared to the 2015 baseline.

We are implementing a system that notifies us of any potential leaks in the domestic water installation, and we are in the process of reviewing solutions that can be introduced to reduce water consumption in the common areas.

Future goals

To reduce water consumption by 20% relative to the number of visitors by 2030.
We are assessing the possibility of using rainwater and greywater in the future for toilet flushing and plant irrigation within our center.

There is an apiary on the roof of Westfield Mokotów. The beehives and bees are cared for by Pszczelarium. In 2023, we harvested 142 kg of honey, which is marketed as Warsaw honey – Mokotów.

In addition to bees, our shopping center is also friendly to other animals. We have insect hotels as well as nesting boxes for swifts, extremely beneficial birds.

In 2024, in cooperation with the Mokotów District Office, we joined a greening initiative for Mokotów, distributing a total of 300 lavender and azalea seedlings to local residents.

Future goals

To continue activities in cooperation with local partners and strive to increase biodiversity in the immediate vicinity.

100% of our waste is either recycled, composted, or used to generate new energy through incineration, depending on the waste type.

Annually, we recycle 419 tons of waste, including:

  • 339 tons of cardboard

  • 30 tons of plastic

  • 2.66 tons of glass

  • 47 tons of mixed waste

Additionally, from May to December 2025, in partnership with the VIVE Game4Planet campaign, we collected 2,667 kg of used clothing. This amount of clothing corresponds to a more efficient management of 5,813 kg of CO₂, equivalent to 66,054 hours of TV watching.

Future goals

By 2030, we plan to reduce total waste by 15%, with 70% of all waste being recycled.

In 2024, 32% of visitors reached Westfield Mokotów by public transport or on foot.

Westfield Mokotów is one of the best-connected shopping centers. Two metro stations, tram lines, buses, and an SKM station are located within close proximity.

At the same time, we provide convenient access by bike with 3 bicycle parking areas and a nearby Veturilo city bike station.

The center is equipped with 6 electric vehicle charging stations, allowing up to 13 vehicles to charge simultaneously.

Future goals

Increase the number of electric vehicle charging points to 36 by 2030 (including 14 fast chargers).

Every year, we undergo a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) audit, confirming compliance with the highest standards for the safety of both employees and visitors.

Future goals

Maintain the highest standards of safety and comfort for both visitors and employees.

In 2023, 46% of the surveyed stores at Westfield Mokotów were classified as “Active,” “Advanced,” or “Leaders” according to the SRI index (6). So far, we have analyzed 100 tenants from the fashion, sports, jewelry, and accessories categories. By the end of 2027, we plan to analyze all of our brands.

Future goals

Achieve an even higher SRI score, supported by tenants and their sustainability initiatives. Offer customers an even more sustainable product selection.

Westfield Mokotów is actively engaged in initiatives supporting the local community. Together with the PoWarszawsku project, we organize an annual series of walks and excursions around Mokotów. These outings help us uncover many hidden stories and little-known histories connected to our neighborhood.

As part of the “Menstruation – Just a Normal Thing” campaign, in collaboration with the Akcja Menstruacja foundation, we provide access to free hygiene products at the State Medical Institute of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, the KADR Cultural Center, and three secondary schools.

We also engage seniors through the "Cinema for Seniors" program, organized with the KADR Cultural Center, inviting them to regular film screenings at Westfield Mokotów.

Every year, we host the Westfield Good Festival, inspiring our visitors to live more sustainably in their everyday lives. In 2024, over 3,000 people participated in the Westfield Good Festival.

Under the Community Resilience Action Plan strategy, we supported over 700 people in 2024.

Future goals

In the coming years, we will continue these initiatives, focusing on sustainability and socially responsible actions.
