Get the Look: "Chic Modern Mom"

Q: I’m a modern 38-year-old mother of three who’s extremely slender. Can you suggest some pieces that are appropriate for my age and body type?

-- Michelle Foster, San Jose, CA

Dear Michelle:

This spring it’s easier than ever to channel your inner Audrey Hepburn for a chic, modern look. The noted actress and fashion icon shared your thin column or “flute” shape, and she epitomized femininity.

Here’s how to bring that grown-up chic to a modern wardrobe suitable for a busy mom. Create curves for your lean silhouette with items that fit your body without being too clingy or draped. You can add a mid-width belt at your natural waist to cinch fuller blouses, tops and dresses. Details like seaming on jackets or skirts can suggest an hourglass form, while strategic fabric embellishments such as ruffles and shine can add balanced volume.

Skip the logos and synthetic fabrics found in a teenager’s closet and opt for natural fibers in rich, saturated colors. Your secret weapon? Engage the services of a good tailor to ensure that every item will fit and flatter. Here are five pieces to give you sophisticated and feminine style worthy of a chic, modern mom.

1. The Color-Blocked Dress

BCBG – Colette Color-Blocked Dress, $168

Here’s a shapely way to wear the abstract art trend that many top designers featured this season. Graphic details frame an hourglass silhouette in a dress that’s both modern and feminine. Style it with a cuff bracelet and peep toe pumps and treat yourself to a night out sans kids.

2. The Blazer

J.Crew – Schoolboy Blazer in Herringbone, $175

A good structured jacket defines your shape and dials up even the most casual look, and it’ll last in your wardrobe for years. This one features a slightly shrunken shape, and metallic threads give the bold colors a subtle sheen. Try it over a printed blouse with your favorite denim or pair it with the pleated skirts that are so on-trend this season.

3. The Crop Straight Leg Jean

Nordstrom  – Hudson Jeans 'Bacara' Crop Straight Leg Jeans, $194

Straight leg jeans are a sophisticated and flattering alternative to the skinny jean or ‘jegging’ that can overemphasize your slenderness. These feature flap back pockets to round out the seat and give subtle volume to your bottom half. They’ll work with everything from inexpensive tees to dressier jackets, and the cropped hem is a perfect option for spring and summer. Wear them with wedges or cap toe heels for extra polish.

4. The Swimsuit

Dillard's – La Blanca Rainbow Stripes One-Piece Swimsuit, $105

You’ll make some waves poolside in a swimsuit that flatters your body type. The bandeau neckline and twisted bust add fullness to your chest while the shirred bodice and bright colors craft curves for your torso. The rich brown color is a fresh change from basic black.

5. The Halter Top

Michael Kors - Crochet-Neck Top, $89.50

A halter top will flatter your figure much more than an oversize, boxy tee. This one from Michael Kors features a crochet neckline with cut-in shoulders and layered chiffon with just the right amount of volume. Pair it with everything from slim ankle pants to wide trouser jeans.
