Health, Safety & Environment .

Westfield is committed to making each of its sites secure and environmentally friendly, where only safe working practices are adopted and where all staff understand what is expected of them and actively encourage safe and responsible behaviour from their colleagues.

Health & Safety

We see commitment to the best possible Health & Safety performance, strong leadership and total involvement from senior management as essential elements in guaranteeing success. To maintain this desired culture, Westfield's senior management has committed to undertake the following:

  • Set a high standard of safety behaviour, lead by example.
  • Target effort where it can do the most good in terms of health, safety and the environment (HE&E) by the early identification of risks at the design and planning stages so they can be eliminated or reduced.
  • Ensure accountability for operational performance throughout the management team.
  • Ensure that sufficient resources are provided to eliminate or reduce risks.
  • Ensure lessons are learnt and continual improvement is implemented.
  • Support the development of knowledge and skills through training.
  • Listen to all views expressed on HS&E issues.
  • Fully support all employees in the execution of their responsibilities and provide training to improve their competency in HS&E.

Our employees also have a vital role; not just in their own behaviour and attitudes but also in influencing and inspiring others. By making the following behaviours second nature, our people can make a difference:

  • At all times promote high personal standards for HS&E.
  • Considering HS&E in every decision they make.
  • Leading by example - if it's not safe, don't do it and don't have your co-workers do it either.
  • Encouraging others to achieve equally high standards.
  • Reporting any unsafe condition or action that may put individuals or the business at risk.
  • Speaking out and asking if something looks wrong or they're unsure of how to do the job safely.

Environmental Commitments

The most stringent, cutting-edge environmental strategies are guiding the design and construction of Stratford City. Site-wide strategies approved by the planning authority include:

ENVIRONMENTAL BUILDING DESIGN

To design buildings whose construction and occupation will entail low environmental impact, particularly through efficient use of materials, energy and water. Buildings will be designed to a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ or ‘Excellent’ and with a 10% improvement on Building Regulations.

WASTE

To minimise the quantities of construction waste produced and sent offsite. Once operational, Stratford City will also work towards municipal waste targets (including a recycling target of 30% by 2010 and 33% by 2015).

ECOLOGY & NATURE CONSERVATION

To protect and enhance existing ecological habitats of value on the site where practical, or mitigate their loss where not, and to support nature conservation within the site as a whole. To implement a green/brown grass roofing strategy where possible across the site.

MATERIALS

To minimise the environmental impact of material use throughout the selection, design and construction processes. Materials chosen will be at least category B from the BRE Green Guide to Specification.

AIR QUALITY

To control and minimise public and workforce exposure to pollution and noise in order to maintain a healthy living and working environment for all.

Considerate Construction

Westfield’s Stratford City site is registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme, a nationwide initiative established by the construction industry. Stratford City is monitored against the scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice, which is designed to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirements. The three main areas of concern fall into three main categories: the environment, the workforce and the general public.
